Geology describes the physical properties of the materials that make up planets. It studies the ongoing results of nature’s grand chemistry experiment. It may even work with astronomy to study the physical makeup of other worlds. Like paleontology, it represents a form of time travel through the lens of scientific imagination. Geologists read layers of rock like the pages of a giant history book, but they also help chemists, engineers, and other scientists gather raw materials for new technologies. In a way, the discipline predates our species, beginning at the moment one ape showed another which rocks make the best hand tools. Now we use complex spectroscopic tests, ground-penetrating radar, and a spectrum of other tools to plumb the depths of our planet for other wonders.
