Fluorescent materials may appear quite plain in daylight, but surprise the eye with a diversity of neon colors when excited by UV light. Where do these colors come from? Ultraviolet light is normally invisible to the naked eye, as it is outside the spectrum visible to humans. However, it can cause certain objects to emit visible light. Instead of merely reflecting the invisible light, the atoms in fluorescent materials become excited by its energy. The UV light “charges” these atoms, and they instantly release the energy in the form of visible light. The colors of fluorescent light are often strange and beautiful, found few other places in the natural world. We hope you enjoy experiencing them in our fluorescent chamber.
